Once again a shroud of controversy looms over the Trump campaign, however this time Trump was not the delinquent. Apparently Trump’s rhetorical belligerence has manifested in a different form, as his campaign manager Corey Lewandowski was charged with battery on Tuesday by a police officer in Jupiter, Florida, after an encounter with a news reporter this month.
The incident occurred on March 8th after a conference, when reporter, Michelle Fields of Breitbart News approached Donald Trump. Before she could ask any questions she was grabbed by Lewandowski; the magnitude of the issue was further understood when she posted on Twitter a picture of finger-shaped bruises on her arm
Mrs. Fields pressed charges three days later. Detective Marc Bujnowski also managed to acquire a testimony from Washington Post reporter, Ben Terris who claimed to have seen the incident unfold. A video footage was then found, shows Fields walking beside Trump before Lewandowski grabs her arm and pulls her backward.
Amidst such compelling evidences Lewandowski denied ever touching Mrs. Fields and even called her “delusional.”
Lewandowski’s belligerence may be unorthodox, but it isn’t surprising. On March 19th, video footage of a Trump rally caught Mr. Lewandowski grabbing a protester from behind by his collar and pulling him backward. Reporters have also been subjected to his incivility, as he would scream and curse at them frequently.
During his time working for Bob Ney as chief of staff in 1999, Lewandowski was arrested and charged for bringing a pistol into a congressional building. Police seized his weapon which led him to unsuccessfully sue in federal court, claiming he had been stripped of his gun without due process.
Republican front-runner Donald Trump is in full support of Lewandowski and believes that he is truly innocent. Trump says that Lewandowski will still be his campaign leader as he fights the charges. “Lewandowski was a good man who was very, very seriously maligned, and I think it's very unfair," he said.
He also questions the reliability of Mrs. Field’s claims, bringing to attention her earliest statements before she knew the incident was taped. To this Mrs. Fields replied “My story never changed. Seriously, just stop lying.”
